The esteemed rock music critic Patrick MacDonald (Seattle Times) once said about me,
"Seattle has a new rock singer to celebrate!!" (exclamation marks are mine.)
I have forever been indebted to him for speaking so kindly of me, but right after that first album, I fell off the face of the earth. That happens to some of us sometimes.
I'm back I hope, but not with a vengeance; just back, doing what I love best, writing songs and recording them in my own quirky, smelly way.
I first debuted as a Seattle-based rock artist; I really love straight ahead rock, but find myself wandering all over the map when I write. I'm still trying to define my music, but I can only get about as close as Sheryl Crow on Heroin.
Don't get me wrong. I don't do chemicals. (liar! she keeps starbucks and fume blanc in business! and ever time her back goes out - whoa - lookout hydrocone!) It's just a reference frame for you to get to know me. And for me to reach you.
Currently I'm deep into writing new music and trying to finish up some old; having converted to a computer format. Tough learning curve!
Although I work with a handful of brilliant musicians, I do most of my work alone. Those people I have been fortunate enough to work with include the following; Jennifer Todd, John Swanson, Chris Nickels, Dan Mohler, Peter Jeffrey, Tom Frodsham, Felix Delvillar, Patrick McCabe. See more on these folks here.
My first venture into independent music, "Too Long Away" garnered:
1. A Billboard Songwriting Award 2. Three NAMA (Northwest Area Musician Association) Award Nominations: Best New Artist, Best Adult Contemporary Album, Best Rock Vocal 3. An exhibition spot in the Wing Luke Museum Exhibit: A Bridge Home; Music in the Lives of Asian-Pacific Islanders. 4. Too Long Away is being invited to appear on a compilation cd marketed to radio and labels. 5. "Too Long Away" held the NO. 1 spot on MP3 Songs Top Unsigned Artists Chart for 3 weeks! www.mp3songs.org.uk 6. "Help Me" a track off TLA, is currently in the Top 5 rotation at Maddhouz Radio
My influences are many, but you can count Joni Mitchell, Natalie Cole, Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald and Ann Wilson among the few singers whose work I fell in love with. When my voice students ask who they should listen to and study, I give them this short list.
I'm mainly a singer-writer, but on a good day, you can catch me strumming guitar, playing keyboard, or trying to find notes on my violin.
I'll close with this quote:
Karla has a beautiful voice that haunts you long after you've heard it. I feel the influences; Joni Mitchell, a little Bonnie Raitt, some Pretenders. Her music has all of the best of the best, yet carries its own original flavor . . . makes me want to get in the car right now, go to Tower records and buy all of her cd's. ~ Brent Bennett - Seattle Area Musician and owner of a fabulous voice in his own right!
